Joseph-Nicolas Gauthier (1689-1752) was born at Rochefort, France. Nine children were born to him and his wife Marie Alain. As a trader, he was financially ruined and made an outlaw by the British. He took refuge at Beaubassin and then to Île St-Jean (Prince Edward Island). The youngest of the family was Jean Baptiste (1741). From 1758 to1761 he was at Petite Rochelle (today Restigouche in New Brunswick) from whence he was sent to Halifax as a prisoner to be released in 1763. Later, several Gauthiers left to settle either in New Brunswick or in Quebec.
